Are you looking forward to becoming PADI Open Water certified? As a new diver, it can be overwhelming to try and learn all the new skills and techniques necessary to explore the underwater world safely and efficiently. However, there are three key points that are essential to master for a successful dive: proper breathing, body position, and fin kicking technique. In this blog, we explore these diving tips in more detail and discuss how the Medusa Diving team can help you become a competent, confident diver. We spoke with Johan Metsu, IDC staff instructor and owner of Medusa Diving, to get his perspective on what a new diver should know.

Divers Tip #1 – Breathing Proper breathing is one of the most important skills for any diver to learn. Proper breathing not only helps you control your air supply and avoid unnecessary exertion, it also helps maintain your buoyancy and control your movements underwater. Herein lies the secret to graceful buoyancy. Think of your lungs as the main reason to control your buoyancy underwater. Are you getting too close to the bottom? - inhale a little deeper than normal. If you feel your body floating too much, exhale a little deeper and wait until you sink to the desired position. At Medusa Diving Bredene/Oostende, our experienced instructors will teach you how to breathe deeply and calmly, inhaling and exhaling gently through the mouth. This technique will not only ensure that you get enough oxygen but it will also help you stay calm and still, which is essential for safe diving.
Divers Tip #2 – Body Position In addition to proper breathing, body position is another critical point to pay attention to as a new diver. Maintaining good body position can help you conserve energy, give you control over your movements, and reduce drag through the water. At Medusa Diving Bredene/Oostende, our instructors will teach you to maintain a good streamlined position, with your body horizontal and your arms most likely out in front of you. This helps to shift your center of gravity forward toward your head and keeps your feet higher. Not only does this help you move through the water more efficiently, but it also reduces the risk of accidentally hitting coral or the bottom.

Divers Tip #3 – Fin Kicking Finally, mastering a proper fin kicking technique is essential for every diver. Your diving fins are one of the most important tools you have to control your movements and conserve energy while diving. At Medusa Diving Bredene/Oostende, we teach our students a proper fin kicking technique, which involves using your leg muscles to make a ‘frog fin kick’ motion. This not only helps you glide through the water more efficiently, but it reduces the risk of stirring up sand or disturbing the underwater environment.
Mastering correct breathing, good body position and proper fin kicking technique are the three most important skills every new diver should focus on.
At Medusa Diving Bredene/Oostende, we are committed to helping our students become competent and confident divers, and our experienced instructors are dedicated to providing the highest quality and support. Whether you are a beginner diver or wish to improve your skills, we invite you to experience an unforgettable diving experience in our waters. Take these tips with you and dive into your next adventure.
